MEET YOUR NEW CHIEF:

Chief Timothy “Tim” Carroll was born in Camden and grew up on Mount Desert Island. He attended the University of Maine at Orono, receiving an Associate Degree in Legal Technology, to better prepare him for his pursuit of a law enforcement career.

In 1991, fresh out of college and on his 21st birthday, Tim started his law enforcement career at the Rockland Police Department. A few years later, Tim joined the Bar Harbor Police Department as a Patrol Sergeant and then Maine Marine Patrol, where four of his family members had or were serving; during his tenure at the Marine Patrol, Tim received his Coast Guard Captains License and still holds it.

In 1998, Tim was honored with a life-saving award after he and another Marine Patrol Officer rescued three people involved in an overturned boat accident in Penobscot Bay, approximately three miles off the coast of Camden. Part of that rescue involved resuscitating an eight year old girl, who was submerged; she was hospitalized and survived.

In 2004 Tim left the Marine Patrol for a civilian career but in 2009, Tim re-entered law enforcement as a Patrol Deputy with the Knox County Sheriff’s Office. Not long after being hired, Sheriff Dennison promoted Tim to the Patrol Administrator position. Sheriff Dennison later appointed Tim as her Chief Deputy in 2010, where he served until his election to Sheriff in 2018.

From 2018 until last week, Tim served as the Sheriff of the Knox County Sheriff’s Office. Tim’s position included overseeing not only the Patrol and Criminal Investigations Divisions but also the Knox County Jail. During this time as Sheriff, Tim was very active with the Maine Sheriffs’ Association and served on several county and state committees with a focus on improving today’s law enforcement services.

Tim has an extensive background in law enforcement leadership and is most proud of his graduating from the 270th session of the Federal Bureau of Investigations National Academy. Tim comes from a long line of law enforcement family members, including his father who served over 51 years in law enforcement. For a short time, both he and his father were serving concurrently as Chief Deputies, Tim in Knox County and his father in Somerset County.

Tim is also an active athletics coach in his community and enjoys his time mentoring youth of all ages. He lives in Owls Head with his wife and son, his daughter is grown and lives in California.
